When we were thinking about having an "M" Litter vom Coraschatten, we reached out to Tony and Megan Hennen to see if they would be willing to lease us Ivanka vom Coraschatten "Hilde" for a litter.  We had hunted with Hilde the past couple of years in South Dakota, in addition to seeing Hilde pass her HZP a couple years ago.  We liked Hilde's strong build, short and tight-fitting coat, and her very calm and sweet temperament.  The Hennen's agreed so next we tried to select a stud dog that match up well with her.  Since we had not helped train Hilde, we wanted to use a stud dog that we were very intimate with (i.e. had trained and/or lived with) so that we would feel more confident in predicting the temperament/trainability of the puppies.  We decided to use our own boy, Luke.  By breeding Hilde to Luke, we were hoping to produce an entire litter of very strongly built puppies with excellent temperaments.  And by excellent temperaments, we mean that we wanted pups who would be happy and friendly with every dog or human they met, as well as being very calm and mellow while not hunting.  By combining these two particular dogs, we also expected to get pups that were particularly strong in the water.

As we were raising the litter, we had a really difficult time trying to determine which puppy to keep but finally decided on Maizey the day that the puppies were tattooed.  She is a very adaptable pup that seems to accept every new situation very easily.  She is a very sweet pup.  Maizey is super calm in the house/truck/crate, but then is very purposeful in the field/water.  She is not the highest-drive dog, but she makes up for it with the strongest desire to please.  She loves feather and furred game and will point/retrieve both with the same intensity.  She is a focused and methodical tracker.  Throughout the VGP, it was apparent that she would do whatever she could to try to make me happy.  She is one of, if not the most, cooperative dogs we have ever owned or trained.  She was fairly easy to force-fetch at 7 months of age.  She has always been a strong pointer and a natural backer.  She loves to retrieve and she hunts equally well in the field or water.  In 2020, she became the youngest Deutsch Langhaar in North American history to pass the VGP.  She earned 295 points and a Prize II at just 15 months of age.  She only missed a Prize I by 1 point!  It was an excellent performance for such a young dog and it has translated nicely to hunting.  Maizey has proven to be a very capable hunting dog.  She has done a great job of pinning and pointing countless wild pheasants and coveys of quail.  Her retrieves are just so polished.  And her manners are great so we can rely on her to cooperate and back nicely whether she is hunting with one of our other dogs or with a friend's dogs.
